Vehicle Highlights
The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta is redesigned with freshened styling, larger exterior and interior dimensions, and a new 4-cylinder engine. Volkswagen's best-selling car returns as a 4-door sedan; the company has not announced plans to replace the 4-door SportWagen station wagon. The 2011 model is more than 3.5 inches longer with 2.6 inches more rear legroom than the 2006-2010 Jetta. Trim levels include S, SE, SEL, diesel-powered TDI, and sport-themed GLI. The standard engine is a new gasoline 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Available is a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 5-cylinder, which carries over from the previous-generation Jetta. The GLI has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. The TDI has a 140-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder. All have a standard manual transmission. Available on the S, SE, and SEL is a conventional automatic transmission. The GLI and TDI offer a 6-speed dual-clutch automated manual that behaves much like an automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Heated seats, keyless entry/engine start, and a navigation system are among the available features. We have not yet tested the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta.
Consumer Guide June 2010 consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com
In an effort to hone in on its core North American audience, Volkswagen has redesigned its highly successful Jetta sedan for the 2011 model year. Set to debut in showrooms this fall in North America, the all-new Jetta has been tailored specifically for North America – and it boasts an expanded lineup.
Boasting a design clearly inspired by VW’s New Concept Coupe that debuted earlier this year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Jetta’s design is very clearly derivative of VW’s other current offerings. Never a big seller overseas, it has been designed to mainly appeal to consumers in North America.
As a result, the Jetta’s wheelbase is now 2.76 inches longer than the outgoing model, while its length increases by 3.54 inches, putting the overall length of the sedan up to around 182.6 inches. As a result, the interior is the roomiest ever offered on a Jetta. The sedan is a mere inch or two shorter than the popular fifth-generation Passat, which was sold here from 1996 to 2005.
The Jetta’s interior now features 2.6 inches of additional rear legroom and a revised overall design. New switchgear is said to have been improved for additional comfort and convenience.
Four trim levels (S, SE, SEL, TDI) will continue to be offered, although the base price has been dropped to $15,995 for the entry-level S model. The 2011 Jetta sees the return of Volkswagen’s 115-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrain as its base engine, while the previously standard 2.5-liter five-cylinder will be on the options list. More performance-oriented Jettas will come with the 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI four-cylinder, while the ever-popular 2.0-liter TDI diesel four-cylinder will be available as its own trim level.
VW is also planning to introduce a Jetta hybrid in 2012.
The TDI has been modified to meet the latest emissions standards in the U.S., but VW says it will average around 34 mpg in mixed driving and 42 mpg on the highway. Six speed manual transmissions will be standard across the line, while six-speed automatics will be optional. The TSI and TDI engines get VW’s quick-shifting six-speed DSG automatic.
Europe will get a larger lineup of engines focused more on small displacement, high efficiency powertrains.
VW says that the Jetta will play a crucial role in expanding its presence in North America. The German automaker has ambitious plans of selling 800,000 VW-branded vehicles in the United states within just eight years. Look for more details and specifications closer to the sedan’s launch later this year.
